Singapore container volume up 5.9pc to 31.6 million TEU in 2012


The Port of Singapore posted a 5.9 per cent increase in container throughput year on year to 31.6 million TEU in 2012, the first time annual volume topped 30 million TEU, announced Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA).
At the same time, the gap is closing between Singapore and its next biggest rival, which recently reported its annual throughput 2.5 per cent increase to 32.5 million TEU.
The MPA also reported ship arrival tonnage as increasing 6.1 per cent year on year to 2.25 billion gross tonnes. Bunker sales dropped 1.2 per cent to 42.7 million tonnes, but leaving Singapore untouched as the world's leading bunker port despite the decline.
