Top air cargo hubs make modest gains in 2012

The world's top air freight hub volumes rose in 2012 - Hong Kong up 2.2 per cent, and Memphis up 2.5 per cent - but 57 per cent of the top 30 air cargo airports suffered declines, according to the Montreal-based Airports Council International (ACI).
"Air freight had mixed results throughout 2012 with some months posting modest gains while other months posted declines, said ACI world economic director Rafael Echevarne.
"Amid the significant downside risks in the Euro area and the fiscal deadlock in the United States throughout the year, growth in air freight came to an overall halt in 2012," Mr Echevarne said.
Global passenger traffic was up 3.9 per cent in 2012 year on year, but the world's top international airports in North America and Europe posted more modest gains, as passenger volumes in emerging markets showed robust advances.
Istanbul passenger traffic grew 20.2 per cent, Jakarta was up 14.4 per cent, Dubai rose 13.2 per cent and Bangkok volume increased 10.6 per cent in 2012 year on year.
